August 30 Come see "Critical Hours"!Our pilot is screening at the Museum of Television and Radio (25 West 52nd Street) on Thursday, Sept. 14, at noon, and at the DGA Theater (Director's Guild of America, 110 West 57th Street) on Friday, Sept. 15 at 1:15 p.m. The screenings are free and open to the public. August 15 Critical HoursCo-creator Thomas Kail was introduced to the world of competitive Lego building at IS 190 in the Bronx, where his sister taught 6th grade. Inspired by the energy and dedication of the students and teachers, Kail brought the idea to document the program to filmmakers Jim and Tom Isler, who had recently completed "Festival," a documentary about competitive high school theater programs in Maine, and who were instantly taken with the subject. Kail, co-creator and director of Freestyle Love Supreme, a hip-hop improv show that has played in New York for two years, at the 2005 HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Jim, who has edited documentary programs for A&E, Discovery and VH1, and Tom, who apprenticed with documentarians D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, together conceived the series as a way to honor the work of innovative educators across the country. "Critical Hours" examines inspiring programs for kids that put a refreshingly new spin on learning. Each episode immerses the audience in a different extra-curricular activity for students ranging from elementary to high school, culminating in high-intensity competitions in which participants demonstrate their knowledge, conviction, and courage. Shot in an intimate documentary style, this series also compares varying approaches to teaching during these critical hours in children's education. |
